A look from Hermes ready-to-wear collection Fall 2009
High-end handbags and silk scarves were hot items over the holidays, helping luxury house Hermes finish 2009 with an 8.5 percent uptick in sales. Sales in the fourth quarter rose 16.8 percent in leather goods and 17.7 percent in silk and textiles, according to Reuters. Gianni Versace SpA has announced the fashion house's first cellular phone design. According to the Wall Street Journal, the phone was designed by Donatella Versace and will retail for upwards of $5,000 when it debuts in May. Burberry Spring 2010
After a dismal year for luxury retailers, sales of luxury goods are expected to grow next year, according to a report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Led by the fairly strong accessories sector, which includes shoes and handbags, sales should grow about 5 percent in 2010. Thanks to cost-cutting measures enacted this year, core profits should rise about 17 percent, according to the report. Demand for luxury goods has declined during the global recession. Sales have fallen 8 percent this year, according to U.S.-based consulting firm Bain and Co.
