The series premiere of NBC's latest edition to its prime-time lineup, Who Do You Think You Are?, debuted Friday night, and if the first episode was any indication, this show is going to be a hit.
On the series premiere of Who Do You Think You Are?, a show that will take seven celebrities on separate journeys to explore their roots and family genealogy, Sarah Jessica Parker learns that her family was not just a part of the American Gold Rush, but also has darker connections to the Salem witch trials.
With the help of Ancestry.com, Parker is first led to Northern California to learn about her great-great grandfathers death during the 1850s, and then to Salem, Massachusetts where she learns that one her earliest relatives in America was charged with allegations of witch craft. With excited exclamations like "You are sure this person is related to me?!" and more somber realizations, "They're saying that they killed her...," the actress is at times overcome by the knowledge of her family's history.
"It's changed everything about who I thought I was. Everything." declares Parker.
Inspired by a hugely successful British series of the same format, each week a different celebrity will be taken on an emotional--and more often than not surprising--journey into their family history.
In addition to Parker, Matthew Broderick, Lisa Kudrow, Spike Lee, Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields and Emmitt Smith will also take the life-changing journey into their past.
This week's episode of the show will take Emmitt Smith from the slave coast of Africa, to Alabama, to West Virginia in search of his rumored white ancestry. In a future episode, Lisa Kudrow travels to Europe in search of answers involving her great-grandmother's death during the Holocaust.
Its a journey of a lifetime for these stars who finally are able to answer the question: "Who do you think you are?"
The next episode of Who Do You Think You Are? will air this Friday, Mar. 12 at 8 P.M. on NBC.
