Two actors who got their first big Hollywood breaks last year took home the supporting Oscars on Sunday night.
Mo'Nique, known more for her stand-up comedy and slapstick appearances on UPN's The Parkers before transforming into the abusive mother in Precious, won best supporting actress at the 82nd annual Academy Awards.
"I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics," Mo'Nique said. She added that she is grateful to Hattie McDaniel, who in 1939 became the first African-American actress to win an Oscar, "for enduring all that she had to so I would not have to."
Christoph Waltz, an Austrian whose portrayal of a ruthless Jew hunter in Inglourious Basterds was his first Hollywood film, won for supporting actor.
"Quentin (Tarantino) with his unorthodox methods of navigation, this fearless explorer, took this ship across and brought it in with flying colors, and that's why I'm here," Waltz said. "This is your welcoming embrace, and there's no way I can ever thank you enough."
